However, our research on globally dispersed teams in a large multinational organization shows that performance depends on how people use the technologies, not the technologies themselves. We asked team members to rate each other's virtual communication behaviors, selected from a growing body of research on virtual teams. Peer evaluations focus on five best practices: matching technology to task, clear intent, staying in sync, being responsive and supportive, and being open and inclusive. (Participants have been working together for some time and are responsible for improving key business processes.) Individual scores are averaged.
